Vaginas Are Ugly? Work Warning: Includes Photo
Gosh I didn’t know vaginas were ugly. I thought they were just like any other body parts, unique. I had to put this photo in because I don’t think there is anything ugly about a vagina, or a labia from an adult woman, but apparently a lot of people find vaginas ugly. (Of course, I have never heard a woman say a penis is pretty, but you don’t find men having surgery because of that…) Salon’s Broadsheet has an article talking about the twisted world of cosmetic surgery on labias, which allows a woman’s husband to see her vagina look like a 13-year old girl’s (hello pedophile husbands here), which has been addressed rather well in an article written by Kate Harding:
Now that our culture is much less repressive, we’ve learned important information that used to be hidden away — like that pubic hair is disgusting (on a woman), which means we must wax it all off to avoid offending our sexual partners, after which we might just discover our vulvas are kind of funny-looking and thus require surgery to give us the “elegant labia” of … children. Such progress we’ve made!
An article published with the BBC has recognized that fact that there is a disturbing psychological component of women wanting to look pre-pubescent for sex when the surgery damages the nerve supply. In other words, what is going on that a woman is willing to injure her sexual nerve supply to have her vagina resemble that of a child?:
But consultant gynaecologist Sarah Creighton and psychologist Lih-Mei Liao challenged the ethics of offering women surgery to address such insecurities, suggesting it was adverts for a “homogenised, pre-pubescent genital appearance” which created these anxieties in the first place…
But rather than curing sexual problems, Dr Creighton suggested surgery might exacerbate them by damaging the nerve supply to the area, impairing sexual sensitivity and satisfaction.
She also suggests that women who undergo this procedure might experience similar problems in childbirth as those who have experienced female genital mutilation, in which parts of the vagina are ritualistically removed.
It is now well documented that women who have undergone such circumcision are more likely to experience significant tearing and bleeding after labour and even the death of their babies, problems which are overcome by Caesarean delivery.
“Labial surgery needs to be rigorously evaluated in future, and for longer term,” said Dr Creighton.
“Furthermore, quality research is needed to improve our understanding of the psychological drivers behind women’s decision to sacrifice sexually sensitive tissue that contributes to erotic experiences, for a certain genital appearance that used to be an obligation only for some glamour models.”
Aside from the creep factor of these guys supposedly wanting to have sex with 13-year old girls’ vaginas, and aside from the fact that these women really cite porn as a reference for cutting their labias (who are these women who have that much time to watch porn and then have surgery because they have decided their vaginas don’t compete?), there is something totally disturbing about the fact that while women would supposedly willingly cut their vaginas for male pleasure, I have never heard of a man having surgery to cut his penis to make sex more pleasurable or visually stimulating for a woman. Never mind the fact that without a serious interplay of mirrors, a definite amount of flexibility and some concentrated eye-opening, you can’t see those parts during sex, women are getting cut so the labia looks better when???
If the vaginal surgery is for sex, but you can’t see it while having sex, then how does that help? I am clueless. But, you know the argument is shaky when women cite porn as their reference. And, you know it’s in bad shape when men say they want to have sex with a child’s vagina. Sexual conventions be damned, this is just kind of sick. Eww, to all of their interviews, and is there a criminal case in there somewhere?
