Make Condoms Fit Better, In the Interest of National Health

February 16, 2010

Want to be in on this study?  You have to determine whether or not condoms fit well enough to leave them on for the entire duration of intercourse.  Oh, and you want to make sure they don’t break or get pulled off.

From a personal perspective, you don’t want them pinching or causing irritation, but according to a recent study, the condoms cause irritation to the penis. Hmm, that’s no surprise given latex allergies.  And even the latex-free condoms that aren’t made of animal skin are made from a rubber base, or just pure rubber.  (I found that out the hard way… latex allergy…) Is it any wonder that we’re not too interested in condoms if they don’t fit right, interfere with pleasure, and you can pay for it with an irritation after intercourse?  We’re left with rubber or animal skins for protection.  Where is the joy in that?

Granted, it may not seem like condoms are important, but since they are part of the first-line defense in preventing the spread of STD’s, I am just wondering why no one looked at this sooner.

The study has implications for countries trying to encourage people to use condoms to reduce the risk of AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy, the researchers reported in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

“Men and their female sex partners may benefit from public health efforts designed to promote the improved fit of condoms,” Dr. Richard Crosby of the University of Kentucky and Dr. Bill Yarber of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Indiana wrote.

Seriously, it took this long to ask me how condoms fit?  Really?  Everybody is supposed to use them but manufacturers didn’t check the fit?  Seems to be a disconnect there.  And what happens if they’re not too big but too small?  That can cause a crimp in your style, literally.  Guess what, I am looking for responses.  Got a problem with condoms, write about it in the comments.  Put it out there, for the good of the country.
