Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s Cronies Now Investigated For Accepting Buy-Outs

March 26, 2010

You know when I had written to Carolyn Cheeks this last year about a ruling that proved that the poor in Michigan are being blocked from accessing the courts in medical malpractice cases because I was worried that it would inordinately affect the African-American populations in the Detroit area, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, a supposed African-American community leader, champion of civil rights, defender of the poor, never wrote back.  In a climate of huge unemployment, and Detroit’s rate of unemployment hitting 50% (See my post here: Detroit’s Unemployment Rate is 50%) one might think that barring the poor from the courts might be an issue for Carolyn Cheeks.  I found it surprising that she didn’t seem interested.

Turns out maybe Carolyn Cheeks had bigger fish to fry, namely her own.  Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick is the mother of former mayor, guilty of embezzling, Kwame Kilpatrick. (Oh what a wicked web…)  In recent reports, as of today, Carolyn Cheeks is being investigated for her connections with Kwame Kilpatrick (Kilpatrick who has also been cited for probation violations that could land him jail time–Kwame, will you never learn?) no matter how far afield:

While U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick previously acknowledgedshe would testify before a federal grand jury probing corruption in Detroit, few knew that Compuware Corp. CEO Peter Karmanos would also be questioned.

But that’s exactly what happened yesterday, according to The Detroit News, which reports Karmanos testified about a $60,000 loan he gave to Kilpatrick after his stay in jail and additional money he paid to the Kilpatrick Civil Fund.

An anonymous source tells the newspaper Karmanos is not a target of the federal investigation, which appears to be focused on the former mayor’s finances and his nonprofit namesake.

Word of Cheeks Kilpatrick’s subpoena broke earlier this month, and her office was quick to point out the congresswoman is not a target and planned to cooperate fully.

So glad a U.S.Rep is “willing to cooperate fully” with this investigation.  Cheeks watch out, lest you land yourself an FBI investigation a la Mike Cox.  But really, shouldn’t our government employees be willing to participate in investigations?  This is no gift, Ms. Cheeks, it’s simply abiding by the law, the very least you can do.
