“Slutty Power Lesbian” As A Style Choice For Jennifer Lawrence?

January 8, 2016

Jennifer Lawrence says that her personal style, as given to a stylist who dresses her, is “slutty power lesbian.” I like that slutty and power are equated, but adding lesbian into the mix is confusing. For the record, “slutty power lesbian” style doesn’t appear in a male-dominated fashion house that she represents, Dior, but is her own personal style. Lawrence spoke with an editor about her fashion choices and indicates that while she is on the red carpet, she is “honored” to be dressed by Dior, but her own style would be terrifically different:

JL: “Slutty power lesbian.” That is literally what I say to a stylist. [Laughs.] I don’t know if that’s offensive—

CL: But that puts me in a tuxedo frame of mind, which I don’t feel like I see you in.

JL: Well, first of all, Dior is its own house that’s very feminine and beautiful; this past press tour every dress was just phenomenal. So you don’t see me as a slutty power lesbian on the red carpet a lot, because I’m embodying the Dior woman, which is an honor.

Embodying the Dior woman isn’t, obviously, a power position. Coining a powerful, catch phrase that lots of media outlets try to interpret? That is powerful.

UsWeekly quotes Lawrence as saying that sometimes she makes style choices based on her body shape, shocker, and that may be more defining than anything else:
“I’ve got tits and an ass. And there are things that are made for skinny people — like a lot of embroidery, or it covers a lot — and those make me look fat,” she said. “I have to show the lumps. If you have boobs, you have to show, like, ‘These are boobs. This isn’t cellulite.’ Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
Streamlined clothing. Tighter clothing that doesn’t ruffle. Maybe that is “slutty power lesbian.” For all that, Jennifer, keep the conversation going. Any woman who uses slutty as a power choice deserves some recognition.
